How to translate these idioms that represent the essence of the Chinese language and culture constitutes the most challenging part of Chinese-English translation of this masterpiece. By exploring the influence of culture on idioms and analyzing the cultural difference between China and western countries, the author of this paper makes a summary of the basic methods used in the C-E translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung, namely, literal translation, substitute, free translation and combination of literal translation and free translation.
