The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan's fame-setting fiction, is a novel about the misunderstanding, the conflicts and the understanding between four Chinese mothers and their four American daughters. The author attempts to interpret this novel from the perspective of post-colonial feminism, for this novel takes the female figures as the subject and it is characterized by its strong feminist consciousness. Based on this, the author further argues that, in the mixed narrative pattern of 'past misery'and 'present happiness', the female figure as well as the oriental figure fall into the trap of 'otherness'.
