The music of ci poetry died out in early Yuan Dynasty, marked specifically by the deaths of Zhang Yan and Qiu Yuan. Its declining is demonstrated by the loss of the scores, the lack of singable ci poems, decreasing of the tunes, scarcity of tune-marked ci music, and the fading of the names of tunes to which ci poems are composed. The social reason lies in that the ruling class does not appreciate or even suppresses ci poetry from being developed. And the literary reason is that the multiple tunes of the Jin Dynasty, and the zaju (poetic dramas set to music) and sanqu (verses with tonal patterns modelled on folk tunes) appeal more to the Notherners, thus naturally take the place of 'quzici,' ci poems composed to the set tunes.
