嵇康“意足”、“任心”、“优游”的玄学个性 ,返归“自然”、心与道冥的人生追求 ,反映于他的诗文 ,则以“真”、“情”为根本 ,或清远超拔 ,或率真旷达 ,或思慎辨明 ,或困惑而徘徊……他把庄子的理想境界人间化 ,把道的境界变成诗的境界 ,演绎了与严酷现实对立的悲剧。他虽常以玄理入诗 。

Ji Kang's metaphisical characteristics are demonstrated by 'being content with your lot,' 'giving free rein to the heart,' and 'passing your days in totally carefree leisure.' His life pursuit lies in returning to the 'natural state,' and the harmony of the soul and the way of Nature. Reflected in his poetry and prose, they are qualities rooted in 'sincerity' and 'sentiment,' and they show themselves to be either detached and aloof, straightforward and broad-visioned, prudent and discriminating, or bedildered and wavering. Ji Kang secularizes Zhuang Zi's conception of life, transforms the moral and aesthetic vision of Taoism into a poetical frontier, thus elaborates a tragedy against the harsh reality. Nevertheless, metaphisical as his poems often are, Ji does not mean to metaphisicize them.
