Joseph O' Neill uses the myth of Odysseus to construct the framework of Netherland, and make it the hidden text of the novel. Hans' s pursuit of his cricket dream broadens the vision and meaning of his life. His roaming in the "Netherland" reflects his inner confusion and perplexity after 9/11, reveals the real living condi- tion, and urges him to search for the family warmth and life meaning. He eventually returns to his Ithaca, London, to complete his life journey of pursuing, roaming and returning. O' Neill, by rewriting the mode of Odysseus myth, intends to widen and extend the novel horizon, sublimating it to be universal and timeless, making the post-9/11 human beings out of fear and anxiety to obtain the spiritual comfort and the soul' s freedom. Meanwhile, O' Neill' s humanistic feelings are implied in it.
