The changes of STIs during sitting bicycle ergometer exercise in 50 stage Ⅰ hypertensive men (aged 35~60 years) were investigated by using ear densitography. The exercise load was heartrate targeted (calculated from the resting HR) as (1) light load-HR increased≥50%, (2) medium load-HR increased≥80%, and (3) heavy load-submaximal HR(85% of maximal HR or 190-age in years). The main findings as compared with those of normotensive control group during exercise were a greater BP reaction, a longer PEP and ICT, and a larger PEP/LVET; besides, the latter reached its lowest (called'valley bottom') value earlier at medium load stage whereas subsequently went up towards heavy load stage. These findings signify an attenuated myocardial contractility at heavier exercise load together with a relatively lower cardiac reserve in the early hypertensives, and consequently their working ability and endurability would be impeded at rigorous task conditions.
