《中国环境史:从史前到现代》一书,是关于中国环境史研究的第一部通史性著作。作者马立博在广泛吸收西方史学界对于中国环境史研究成果的基础上,从环境史的角度对中国从史前到现代进行了详细的考察。同时,作者在该书中也对中国古代环保思想、中国古代市场发展与环境等一些专题做了较深入的探讨。当然,单一运用西方研究成果对中国的研究,不可避免有一定的局限。

China： Its Enviroments And History is the first general historical works on the research of Chinese environmental history. On the basis of the achievements of China＇s environmental history research,Robert B. Marks has made a detailed study of the history of China from the perspective of environmental history. At the same time,the author gives a more in-depth discussion on China＇s ancient i-deas of environmental protection and market development and the environment. However, limitations are found for the research with the unilateral western research achievements.
