Margaret Drabble has long been recognized as a realist novelist, but this definition is recently challenged by some western literary critics who declared their recognition of many postmodern features in Drabble's works. Actually, any excellent writer can never be so simply defined for their complicity and profundity. And Drabble's fictional creation not only faithfully inherits the realist tradition, but also absorbs all sorts of postmodern innovations. Hence this paper intends to make an objective assessment of Drabble's narrative art through a comprehensive survey of her various narrative discourses and her obvious transformation from realism to postmodernism.
