Construction of the Authority of African American Woman’s Personal Voice through Reported Speech

本文主要探讨黑人女性小说家在20世纪70年代初如何巧用直接引语来建构其声音的权威。不同的转述语形式在具体的上下文语境中会产生不一样的效果，因此转述语如何转，需视语境而定。在个人型叙述声音建立的初期，由于社会历史语境的限制，盖尔·琼斯大量采用直接引语可以让女性人物发出自己的声音，同时这种戏剧性的呈现方式又可以冲淡读者对叙述者性别身份的关注，便于黑人女性偷偷参与社会话语，建构黑人女性个人型叙述声音的权威。

This essay aims to explore how African American women construct the authority of personal voice through adopting direct speech given specific socio-historical context. Different quoted speech serves different purposes given specific context. At the early stage of the adoption of the personal voice, the personal narrator in Gayl Jones＇s Corregidora cannot take a full control of the power of narrating, given the historical conditions. Gayl Jones has to show the power of black women＇s voice in a dramatic way through a large number of direct speeches in the novel. This strategy can not only allow the black to voice out, but also divert the attention of the readers from the female identity of the narrator. In this way, black women are allowed access to male authority so as to construct their authority of personal voice.
