Despite his unique style of dialogue narration in modern American literary circles, William Gaddis received both positive and negative reviews from literary critics. The paper is a survey of Gaddis studies in the UK and the US from the perspective of literary technique and theme. Gaddis is good at techniques such as encyclopaedic message flow, dialogue narrative, and allusion, while the themes of his novels touch anti-capitalism and satire on legal locution, etc. Critics hold different understanding of the essence and texture of his fictional techniques and themes. The paper also intends to suggest that it is inappropriate to attribute the difficulties of reading his novels to their postmodern narration.
