《通用汉言之法》成书于1811年,出版于1815年,是第一部英文版汉语官话口语语法著作,采用"实用语法"作为汉语教学体系,通过"翻译法"作为基本的教学与学习手段,给准备入华的传教士们提供实际、有效的帮助。同时,该书非常重视交际文化和文化交互的价值,既介绍了基督教新教的一些观念,也介绍了中国的文化理念和文化价值;其对汉语语体、句法规则等的认识,对现今的汉语教学和世界汉语教育研究都有重要的意义。

A Grammar of the Chinese Language, which was written in 1811, and published in 1815, was the first Chinese mandarin spoken grammar bookin English. Ifformed functional grammar as a system of Chinese teaching. Through the translation method as the basic means of teaching and learning, it was used to get the missionaries going to China well prepared. At the same time, it attached great importance to the value of social culture and the cultural interaction. In the book, some protestant Christianity ideas were introduced, it also introduced China＇s cultural philosophy and values. The understanding of Chinese language syntax rules, styles, are still very important for today＇s Chinese teaching and the Chinese education research.
