Reconsider Zhou Zuoren's Translation of the Concept of Literature

周作人留日时期所撰《论文章之意义暨其使命因及中国近时论文之失》中有关"文学"的定义及论述基本来自美国教授Hunt所著《文学概论》。Hunt的目的在于构建"文学"学科在高等学术机关中的位置,构建过程与近代民族国家的强烈需求密切相关。周作人对此保有疑虑,因此在编译过程中转而将批判矛头指向林传甲的"文以载道"。

The concept of ＂ literature＂ which was discussed in the paper ＂ On th significance of the literature and its mission and the loss of China＇s recent discourse＂ writte by Zhou Zuo-ren during his early study in Japan, was translated from Hunt＇s Literature Hunt＇s attempt of constructing the discipline of literature in the higher academic institutio correlates closely with strong demand of constructing modern nationality. Zhou Zuoren ha e n n d his doubts, so the brunt of his argument was directed at the Lin Chuan-jia＇s statement of ＂ writings are for conveying truth＂.
