The 65-year-old hero Harold Fry in the novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry begins his long journey almost across the whole England totally on foot after knowing one of his old friends is suffering cancer and dying. During the pilgrimage full of challenges,Harold can’t help recalling his painful life since childhood, which easily arouses the sympathy of numerous readers. To interpret the tragedy of his life from the perspective of Lacan’s Mirror-image theory,it can be inferred that it is due to the influence of The other, including the elements of historical background, family background, the nature, etc, that Harold fails to set up his own identity. It is the revealing of The Other that leads to the absence of the subject’s identity, which is the root of his pains in life.
