《一个青年艺术家的画像》中“水”的隐喻

Metaphor of Water in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

本文从认知隐喻学角度来解读《一个青年艺术家的画像》中"水"的隐喻。文中水的变体纷繁复杂,它们除了富有指称意义之外,还富含丰富的隐喻意义。"水"贯穿全文,它的流动性、破坏性、聚散无常性、纯洁性以及多样性等都在文中有所体现。本文主要通过将源域水的这些特性投射到目标域人物心理活动中,产生"力量是水""问题是水"等概念隐喻,从而用以分析爱尔兰的宗教与政治之间的矛盾,通过主人公斯蒂芬对水的不同感受来体现爱尔兰的"瘫痪"状态,即宗教影响下人们思想上处于迷茫的一种状态。

This paper illustrates the conceptual metaphor of water in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,from the perspective of cognitive metaphor. It finds that there are complex variations of water in the text,and they are rich in metaphorical meanings besides the referential meaning. Water runs through the whole novel,and its features,like mobility,variability,purity and diversity are reflected in the text. This paper reflects that these features are mapped to character＇s psychological activities,resulting to the conceptual metaphor,like ＂power is water＂to analyze the contradiction between Irish religion and politics. Through the different feelings on water of the protagonist Stephen,the writer wants to uncover the paralyzed state of Ireland,reflecting the state of vagueness of Irish people under the influence of religion.
