When English is used as a lingua franca, research on language identity of non-native speakers of English has become increasingly vital to understanding these speakers and language use in these non-English-speaking countries.A gap has not been filled in is to examine the diversity of non-native speakers of English rather than solidifying them into a single group.Based on the review of the evolution of concepts and the recent researches on language identity, this paper proposes that Chinese learners of English still highly identify with their mother tongue despite the'English fever'and value the so-called'standard'paradigms although they agree there should be a paradigm shift in view of the world-wide English use and the booming new English varieties.
