The phenomenon of "manipulation" inevitably exists in translation practice, which is both in literary translation and nonliterary translation. This poper takes English translating works of San Guo Yah Yi in the early and contemporary time as examples. Such social and historical context, translators, and publishers as a pair of "intangible or tangible hands" play a very important role in manipulating the choice of translation strategies, the formation of the translation version and its distribution, etc. However, "Translation is by no means manipulation." Therefore, it is particularly important to clarify the relationship between translation and manipulation. A correct view of the manipulation power behind translation is helpful to reveal the historical time and ideology as well as the influence of the translator's subjectivity on translation, which is also helpful to widen the new field of translation studies.
