Based on the new media theory, this paper explores the a simulated5,world in the novel O u t o f This W o r ld by Graham Swift, a famous contemporary British writer. In the novel, the boundary between natural and artificial, original and reproductive, true and unreal has totally exploded. There is no connection between signifier and signified. Images, symbols and codes work to-gether to compose a a hyper real^ , a real without origin or reality. This paper discusses the “ simulated” world mainly from the aspects of photograph, television and the real world. Swift suggests that living in such a world overwhelmed by media culture, people in modern Britain suffer from a feeling of being at loss and a sense of life nihility. Through this novel, we can see the author’s critical spirit and his crisis awareness towards contemporary society and its culture.
