The paper introduces Gloria Naylor, an African American female writer, and her magic realism work Mama Day. It points out that Mama Day creates many vivid time - related images by a constant conversion of the two spaces from New York to Willow Spring: country and city, life and death ,Cocoa and George, hands and lis- tening. The paper interprets the images in the works and analyses the binary relationship of the images and the implied meaning of time from perspectives of cultural criticism, explains the important cultural ideas of African Americans, i.e. "the entanglement of the past and the present, the interlacing of the present with myth and ar- chetype," and reveals the importance of any nation's inheriting its spiritual and cultural heritage.
