On Translation of Burton Watson in the Context of Contemporary American Poetry

美国汉学家Burton Watson同时也是一位成就斐然的中国古典诗歌译者,他的译文语言明白晓畅、诗歌意境悠远,在学界与普通读者中均有较高的评价。本文尝试考察与Watson翻译活动密切相关的美国当代诗歌写作传统,尤其关注后者对前者翻译行为的具体影响,从一个新的角度对Watson译作的成功做出深入阐述,并由此建议在对外译介中国文学时,有必要将译入语国家诗学状况、文学传统等重要因素纳入考察范围。

Burton Watson,a distinguished sinologist,is also a renowned translator of ancient Chinese poetry. With accurate language and ingenious translation strategy,Watson＇s versions have won wide recognition among scholars as well as common readers. The success of Watson＇s translation has already been explored,however,with little attention paid to the context of contemporary American poetry. Therefore,the paper analyzes this context in which Watson has been conducting his translation practice and furthermore,makes suggestions on how to introduce Chinese literature into other literary traditions.
