禅宗"以音声为佛事",十分重视音乐艺术的运用,特别重视佛曲在弘法、化众、修行中的功能。在唐代,礼佛、娱佛的音乐演奏活动兴盛,奏唱佛曲已蔚然成风,对后世的佛曲产生了深远的影响。由于佛曲的不断俗化,使佛曲俗化中的俗曲在寺院中、僧人中流传开来,不少禅师用俗曲"唱道"与"授徒",用俗曲喻禅说禅也成为禅师上堂说法中的一大景观;而一些禅师对世俗歌舞表现出浓厚兴趣,并从理论上概括和诠释了世俗歌舞对于佛事的重要作用。

Taking music as Buddhist ceremony,Zen attaches great importance to the application of music to Buddhist,especially Buddhist songs in promoting Buddhism,enlightenment and cultivation.In the Tang Dynasty,playing Buddhist music and singing Buddhist songs were quite popular in Buddhist ceremonies,which in turn influenced the Buddhist music.Due to the secularization of Buddhist music,the folk music from the secularization Buddhist music spread out among monks and Temples quickly.Some Buddhist masters use folk songs to cultivate and enlighten,which became a popular way of promoting Buddhism.Some master showed great interest in folk songs and dances,and concludes the importance of employing folk songs and dances in promoting Buddhism.
