Today, compared with vital street interfaces in the old district, a number of relatively isolated street interfaces in the new towns present the aspect of a'street wail'beside the sidewalk. This kind of new street interface is taking away the vibrancy of the neighbourhood and providing fewer pleasant street experiences for the pedestrian. Furthermore, this design seems to be increasingly prevalent in new towns in Hong Kong. Based on the site research and precedent, new criteria will be created to assess the quality of the existing street interface in Hong Kong, which includes assessment of the diversity of functions, the density of building entrances, the mixture of activities and the physical quality of the sidewalk. The building typology, vehicle-orientated streets and relevant governmental policies in Hong Kong have had a significant impact on this passive street interface, not only working cooperatively but also interplaying with each other at the same time.
