Williams's Ekphrastic Poems: Transformation and Reconstruction of Brueghel's The Adoration of the Kings

尼德兰绘画大师勃鲁盖尔的画作《三王来拜》取材圣经故事"博士来拜"。该画作剥去肃穆的宗教色彩,注重体现人性的阴暗面。美国现代派诗人威廉斯从中获得灵感,先后创作了两首艺格敷词诗作《佩特森》第5卷第3章和《三王来拜》。前者再现审视绘画中的细节,引导读者领略体味作品中的意蕴;而后者则以其独特的视角和视线移动设计再现并重构勃鲁盖尔的绘画艺术空间。威廉斯以其特立独行并体现现代主义风格的方式追随勃鲁盖尔,向大师表达敬意。

The Adoration of the Kings by Pieter Brueghel, master of the Netherlands in the 16^th century, is based on the Bibli- cal story of The Adoration of the Magi. Yet, it strips solemrdy religious events and elements and focuses on reflecting the dark side of human nature. Inspired by the painting, William Carlos Williams, an American modern poet, composes two ekphrastic poems, Section 3 of Paterson 5 and The Adoration of the Kings. Williams, in Paterson 5, depicts the details of the painting and directs the sight of readers, and gives them a deep appreciation of and a better insight into the painting. In The Adoration of the Kings, Williams attempts to transform and re-create Brueghel＇ s painting through his own poetic lines and his design of the eye＇ s linear movement, paying homage to Brueghel as well as following him in a way that proclaims his independence and embodies his unique modern style.
