On the Deep Implications of Character Names in The Water Margin

受小说史观的影响,中国古代小说人物命名讲究来历,虚构者少。但这种情况到《水浒传》开始发生变化,作者利用汉语言文字的特点,对某些人物姓名经过精心构思和设计,使其突破了符号性、特指性而暗示了小说创作意图、思想倾向和在小说叙事结构中的作用,因而具有深层意蕴。《水浒传》顺应了历史潮流,对此后明清小说人物命名方式起到了引领作用。但因为是首倡者,史无前例,所以手法还不成熟,隐蔽性很强,有时候甚至显得似有似无,难以把握,解读时必须小心谨慎。

Influenced by historical concept of novels,the character names in Chinese classical novels were rarely found to be made-up but came from historical figures. But such a case began to change since The Water Margin was composed,the author used the characteristics of Chinese language to design some character names meticulously and made them break through the symbolic and specificity of names and give conceive deep implications such as the novel creation intentions,ideological tendency and structure function in the novel narratives. The Water Margin conformed to the historical trend,led the way of naming of characters of Ming and Qing Dynasties Novels and produced great impact on them. Because there was unprecedented,its technique of naming of characters was not mature and the deep implications were invisibility to be found sometimes,therefore,we should be careful when we interpret the novels.
