Victorian Age,the golden age of British history,is full of hypocrisy, blindness, complacence and cruel oppression of human nature in the mainstream culture and morality.Sue Bridebread in Jude the Obscure by famous English novelist Thomas Hardy is a typical example. She changes from an innocent and lively girl to an oppressed and tragic woman with a neurotic personality. The study on the establishment and development of Sue's neurotic personality from the angle of socio-cultural psychoanalysis of Karen Horney can not only reflect Hardy's criticism of the destruction and oppression of human nature by the traditional social morality and his discovery of the hypocrisy and coldness covered by prosperity in the Victorian Age,but reveal the conflict and clash between new ideas and old agricultural civilization in the rapidly developing industrial civilization.
