On the Occurrence of Chinese Calligraphy Art

书法是汉字特有的艺术,其他文字亦有艺术化的书写,但只是美术字。其区别乃书法之"法"包含了笔画的规定性与抒情的无限性。缺少前者为图画字,缺少后者为印刷体。书法的产生与文字的象形没有直接关系,汉字的隶变是书法产生的内部条件,书写工具的选择是其外部条件,而中国古代哲学思想和思维方式则是培育其内部与外部条件的土壤。

Chinese calligraphy is a special art occurring only in Chinese characters. Other languages also have their artistic form of writing, but they are only art words and are not comparable with Chinese calligraphy. The difference lies in the standardization of strokes and expressing of emotions in writing, without the former it produces only pictures, while without the latter it produces printing letters. The occurrence of Chinese calligraphy has little to do with the hieroglyphic feature of Chinese character. Li-bian was the internal factor for its occurrence and the selection of writing tools the external one, whereas the philosophy and thinking method of ancient Chinese people provided the soil for the growth of the other two factors.
