吴德功是近代台湾的诗文大家,也是台湾被日本割占之后仍留居桑梓的士人群体的代表人物。他在乙未割台期间及之后的诗文创作,典型地体现了台湾本土文人面临前所未有的历史巨变时复杂的时代感受与人生况味,不仅对了解日据时期台湾古典文学的发展有突出意义,而且是研究当时台湾士人心灵史的生动文本,有重要的史料价值。

Wu Degong was one of the great masters in the modern Taiwan Residents poetic circle. And he was also a representative personage of the people who stayed in the homeland of Taiwan after the Japanese Occupation. His poetry and prose creation when and after the Qing government ceded Taiwan to Japan in 1895 typically reflected the complex feelings and life experience of Taiwan Residents literates who faced unprecedented historical changes. It is not only of significant value for understanding the development of classical Taiwan Residents literature in the period of Japanese Occupation, but also a vivid text for the study of the mentality of the intellectuals in Taiwan at that time.
