The ＂Socio-cognitive Approach＂（also called ＂Discourse-cognitive-society Triangle＂）,proposed by van Dijk,emphasizes the fundamental mediating function of mind between discourse and society,paying special attention to the central role played by mental model,context model and knowledge device in the explanation of the relationship among language,power and ideology.van Dijk is heavily indebted to psycho-linguistics,cognitive psychology and cognitive linguistics in developing his own Socio-cognitive Approach to discourse analysis which in turn has enriched and strengthened those theories by integrating and applying some of the basic concepts and methodologies of those theories to the study of discourse and society.
