Think tanks provide key support for the scientific, democratic and law-based policy-making of the Communist Party and the Chinese government. In order to better accomplish this goal, think tanks must remain neutral and professional and uninfluenced by the sources of their funding. Well-known international think tanks are good current examples that demonstrate the importance of diversified funding to the objectivity of these institutions. In China, most think tanks are governmental or quasi-governmental organizations funded by the national treasury, whereas most social think tanks rely on self-fundraising. Maintaining a diversified funding for these think tanks is important in ensuring their credibility, high quality research and sustainable development.
