Yuan Shikai's Political Circumstances Between the Coup in 1898 and the Boxer Uprising in 1900

以往研究戊戌政变到庚子期间袁世凯的活动,多注重于"告密"疑案、练兵及其在山东的"剿拳保教"政策;对这个时期朝局中袁氏政治境遇的关注还不够。在应对山东危局问题上,袁世凯与毓贤的分歧与纠葛,除政见差异外,亦从一个侧面反映了军机大臣荣禄与刚毅之间的权力斗争。新出版的《徐世昌日记》及未刊荣禄信札,为揭示这段历史的复杂性提供了珍贵的资料。

Previous research largely focuses on Yuan Shikai's activities of military training and his policy of 'Suppressing Boxers and Protecting Christianity' during his tenure as governor of Shandong Province and has not paid enough attention to Yuan Shikai's political circumstances.In terms of dealing with the Shandong crisis,Yuan Shikai's conflicts and interactions with Yuxian were due to their different political standpoints,and revealed the power struggle between Ronglu and Gangyi in the Grand Council.The recently published Xu Shichang's Diary and the unpublished Ronglu's correspondence provide valuable materials for investigating this question.
