A Brief Analysis of the Understanding and Response of the Taiwan Authorities to China's Mainland's First Nuclear Test

对于大陆的核武器计划,台湾当局在与美国展开情报合作的过程中逐渐有所了解,进而一厢情愿地试图与美国合作摧毁大陆核武器基地。随后,大陆成功进行首次核试验,给台湾当局带来巨大的心理冲击。对此,蒋介石等试图贬低大陆核能力,继续敦促美国与其合作摧毁大陆核设施,进而在再次遭到拒绝、对美失望之余,开始秘密启动自己的核武器计划。

The Taiwan authorities＇ understanding of China's Mainland＇ s nuclear-weapons program was rooted in their intelligence cooperation with the United States, whereby they hoped to cooperate with the United States in order to destroy the Mainland＇ s nuclear base. Subsequently, China's Mainland successfully conducted its first nuclear test, which had a huge psychological impact on the Taiwan authorities. In this regard, Chiang Kai-shek and others attempted to downplay the Mainland＇ s nuclear capabilities and continued to encourage U. S. cooperation to destroy Mainland nuclear facilities, but such actions were rejected by the United States. As a result of their disappointment with the United States, the Taiwan authorities secretly began to initiate their own nuclear-weapons program.
