法兰西第四共和国期间,国家戏剧与音乐部门副主管珍妮·洛朗奠定了公立戏剧系统与戏剧外省化运动的根基;让·维拉尔的阿维尼翁戏剧节与重启的国立大众剧院试图重现大众戏剧的乌托邦理想。戴高乐执政期,文化部长马尔罗大力发展文化事业,公立剧院建设与公众戏剧网络不断扩大。此时,《大众戏剧》成为知识分子们寻找新的"战斗精神"的阵地,由此它也在法国首次掀起了"布莱希特式的革命旋风"。1968年五月风暴后大众戏剧乌托邦走向幻灭。姆努什金的太阳剧社仍然在追寻着这个神话。
After In the French Fourth Republic, Jeanne Laurent, an official laid the foundation of the public theater system and the movement of the theatrical decentralization; Jean Vilar's Avignon theater festival and the restored National Popular Theater were both attempts to recreate the utopian ideal of popular theater. When Charles de Gaulle was in office, Malraux, then the Minister of Culture has vigorously developed cultural undertakings, expanding public theaters and the public theater network. Meanwhile, a magazine named Popular Theater, has become a nurturing source of "fighting spirit" for intellectuals. It started for the first time a "Brechtian revolutionary storm" in French. After the May 1968 events, popular theater Utopia withered away. Nowadays, Ariano Mnouchkine and Theatre of the Sun are still in pursuit of this myth.
