From Vietnam to the Maritime Southeast Asia: Vietnamese Scholar Phan Huy Chu's Travel to Batavia

潘辉注是越南历史上著名的学者和历史学家,曾奉阮朝明命皇帝之命,于1832—1833年期间以"革员"身份前往江流波(今雅加达)执行所谓的"外洋公务",并在归国后将沿途见闻写成《海程志略》一书。本文主要以潘氏此书为基础,并结合相关的汉喃文献资料和前人研究成果,对潘辉注江流波之行的历史背景、航行路线和沿途见闻进行系统的考察和梳理。潘辉注的此次江流波之行以及其所代表的阮朝"外洋公务"活动,对于研究越南古代海洋史的发展脉络、越南古人对西方文明态度的转变以及世界全球化历史进程的发展都有一定的历史意义和价值。

Phan Huy Chu was a famous scholar and historian of Vietnam,and he was tasked by Emperor Minh Mang of the Nguyen dynasty to travel to Batavia(today's Jakarta)on a so-called'Official Overseas Business',and he wrote a book Hai Trinh Chi Luoc about his experience there after his return.This article is mainly based on his book,and together with other related Han Nom documents and research results of others,form a systematic survey and summary on the historical background,sailing lines and experiences along the way of Phan's travel to Batavia.Through the depiction and analysis to these,it could make a conclusion that Phan's travel to Batavia and the Official Overseas Business it represented had certain historical meaning and value for the development of Vietnam's ancient maritime history,ancient Vietnamese's turn on attitude towards Western civilization and the global historical development of the world.
