Compilation and Characteristics of Huzhou Chromatic Printing in the Late Ming Dynasty

明万历后期至崇祯年间,湖州套版印刷技术飞速发展。以闵、凌等为代表的望族刊刻了大量精美的朱墨套印本,并发展至三色、四色、五色本,套色印刷步入了辉煌时期。在发达的经济及刻书业的影响下,湖州套版印刷呈现出独有的特色,形成了家族化模式、文人化与商业化并存的特征。

In the late Wanli to Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty,the technique of chromatic printing in Huzhou improved dramatically.As the representative of the two noble families of Min and Ling in Huzhou managed to print a lot of fine red-black overprint books,which developed to the three colors,four colors,and even five colors on the basis of two colors,marking aglorious period in the history of overprint.Under the influence of prosper economic and book-carving industry,the Huzhou’s chromatic printing showed a unique feature,which formed a characteristic of the coexistence of family model,literati and commerce.
