摘要
大学更名是世界高等教育发展史上普遍的现象。20世纪90年代中期,为吸引和招收更大范围的优质生源,美国特伦顿州立学院更名为新泽西学院。这一行为遭到了校内外诸多利益相关者的反对,并引发了与普林斯顿大学的校名所有权之争。为夺回校名所有权,普林斯顿大学采取了申请专利保护、法律诉讼等手段,最终双方以庭外和解的方式化解了冲突。新泽西学院更名事件,对我国高等教育发展具有几点启示:一是理性看待更名,支持大学谋划发展;二是加强协商沟通,和平合理解决冲突;三是建立完善大学章程,有效防止校名被侵占;四是正确引导舆论,避免事件恶化升级。
University renaming is a universal phenomenon in the history of international higher education. In the middle of 1990s, the Trenton state college was renamed the New Jersey college in order to attract and recruit more qualified students. It has been suffered much opposition from many stakeholders, and led to an ownership dispute of university name with Princeton University. To regain its ownership, Princeton University has applied for patent protection and legal action, but at last the two sides resolved the conflict in an out-of-court settlement. This events has some enlightenment to the development of China＇s higher education. Firstly, to take a rational approach to university renaming and support the university development plan. Secondly, to strengthen communication and resolve conflicts peacefully and rationally. Thirdly, to establish and perfect the university statutes, effectively prevent the school occupied. Fourthly, to correctly guide public opinion and avoid an escalation of events.
