Ethnic Allegiance Pledge in Han Dynasty and Expansion of Northwest Frontier

汉代对西北边疆民族实行归义政策,归义事务有"典客""典属国"专职管理。汉对归顺的匈奴、羌人、小月氏以及西域地区名王贵人封侯赏赐,设置属国对归义大众安置,给予归义民众"田无租、市无赋"的优待,要求边塞不得私自役使归义民众。汉代归义政策的实施对促进西北边疆开拓和边地社会稳定发挥了重要作用。

Han Dynasty had adopted allegiance pledge policy targeting at ethnic groups at northwest frontier.The issues concerning ethnic allegiance pledge had such special administrative duties as＂ Dianke＂ and＂ Dianshuguo.Han Dynasty had offered high administrative titles and grand reward to those submitted ethnic groups such as Xiongnu,Qiang,Xiaoyuezhi and local influential figures.Han Dynasty had established affiliated state for the submitted mass to live,offered favorable rent-free and tax-free policies,and forbidden unofficial enslaving people there.The implementation of all these policies had played important roles for the expansion of northwest frontier and social stability of frontier regions.
