The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of EFL learning on the choice of word classes in Chinese academic writing. 100 Chinese abstracts of MA theses written by English majors and 100 Chinese abstracts of MA theses written by Chinese majors were taken as data to explore the similarities and differences between these two groups in terms of using nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. The analysis was conducted with NLPIR, a software simultaneously segmenting Chinese words and labeling their word class, Antconc 3.2.1w and SPSS 19. The research shows that there are significant differences between English majors and Chinese majors in the frequency of using four word classes(nouns, verbs, pronouns and conjunctions) and six word subclasses(nominal verbs, directional verbs, distinguishing words, personal pronouns, preposition "bei"and coordinating conjunctions) in their Chinese abstracts. The study reveals that intensive foreign language learning has an effect on the choice of L1 word classes.
