"The Kingfishers" is the most brilliant poem by Charles Olson in his early poetic career. It is also his most successful experiment in the theory of projective verse. Though still influenced by Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, Olson was more concerned about William Carlos Williams in exploring with confidence the cultural significance of what is of the American native, the particular, and the local. From the dialectical viewpoint that only change is unchanging, this paper, with a thorough textual interpretation and a focus on the theme of the poem that "what does not change / is the will to change," explores the characteristics of the language, ways of presentation and themes of a projective verse, thus revealing the change of poetic theory and practice that Olson attempts to brin~ to America in the Oostmodem period.
