书法碑名英译的实证研究——以杭州碑林为例

Empirical Research on Translating Titles of Calligraphic Works for Exhibition Purpose:Based on a Case Study of the Stele Forest of Hangzhou

书法外宣英译的现有研究欠缺理论构建与实地调研,因此基于实地调研,对碑林、博物馆等展览场所碑名英译进行理论与实践相结合的实证研究具有一定意义。该类翻译可以功能翻译理论为指导来制定具体策略,并以《公共场所英文译写规范》为参照来制定总体原则。基于适用该类翻译的策略与原则,以杭州碑林为例,对其碑名英译进行了实地考察,从三个方面评析了其译文:重要术语的英译及译名的统一,英译中背景信息的择取,语言与编辑的规范。文章在评析原译文的基础上提供了参考译文。

The current study on translation targeted for introducing Chinese calligraphy to the West was in want of theory construction and field survey.Thus,the theoretical and practical study on translating titles of calligraphic works for exhibition purpose based on a field survey on such occasions as stele forests and museums is valuable.For the translation of this kind,its strategies and principles can be respectively guided by the functional approach and the Guidelinesfor English Translationin Public Places.Based on these strategies and principles,the translations of tablet and stele titles in the Stele Forest of Hangzhou were taken as examples and analyzed from the following three aspects：the translation and conformity of some important terms,the selection of background information from the source text,and the standardization of language and editing.A new version was given based on the analysis of current translations.
