南亭长老对孝道的弘扬

The Promotion of Filial Piety by Nanting Master

南亭长老在讲说华严经义,阐述华严宗理的同时,也非常注重对中国传统孝道的弘扬。南亭长老在讲说佛教的各种经典时,经常就其中涉及孝道的地方加以适当的发挥,使中国传统孝道的意蕴得到一定的阐发。南亭长老曾应邀到台北监狱弘法,面对这样一群特殊的听众,南亭长老向他们弘扬的还是孝道。作为智光商工学校的创办人,南亭长老每周坚持为该校学生上德育课。他自编的课本,除了以点滴渗透的方式弘扬孝道之外,还设有"佛教与伦理"等课专门探讨佛教与孝道之间的关系。南亭长老等一批高僧大德弘扬孝道,在一定程度上具有了维持其未坠之绪的意味,而佛教在维持中国文化传承不绝方面的重大作用也由此可见一斑。

Master Nanting was not only a monk of Huayan sect of Chinese Buddhism, but he also at ta -ched great importance to the promotion of the Chinese traditional filial piety. While giving lectures a- bout Buddhist classics, from time to time Master Nanting appropriately expressed his own views when filial piety was involved so as to elaborate the connotation of the Chinese traditional filial piety in a sense. He was often invited to the prisons in Taibei to carry forward Buddhism. When confronted with such a group of special audience, he still preferred to promote filial piety to them. As the founder of Zhiguang Business and Industry School, he persisted in giving students lessons about moral educa-tion every week. In the textbooks compiled by himself, he also designed special sections about Bud-dhism and ethics to discuss the relationship between Buddhism and filial piety, except the normal pro-motion. Thanks to the promotion of Master Nanting and other monks, filial piety has been preserved up to now, which has fully proved that Buddhism has to play an important role in maintaining the con-tinuity of Chinese culture.
