《世说新语》中女性扮演的家庭角色主要有母亲、妻子和女儿等。作为母亲,她们要照料、关心、保护和教育子女,决定子女的婚姻等。作为妻子,她们要关心丈夫,对丈夫的情感保持忠贞,帮助丈夫从政,保护家人等。作为女儿,她们要接受父母的教育,顺从父母,尊敬父母,维护娘家的尊严等。这些和以往的女性相比没有区别。不同于以往女性的是,她们的思想更开放一些,对情爱的追求更大胆奔放;她们具有远见卓识,屡屡帮助家人渡过难关;她们具备很高的文化素质,能言善辩。魏晋女性的神情风范与品格才能对后世产生了重要影响。

The women in Shih-shuo Hsin-yu mainly play the roles of mothers, wives and daughters. As mothers, they need to take care of, protect and educate their children and determine their children’s marriages. As wives, they need to care for their husbands and keep their feeling loyal to their husbands, be filial to their parents, respect their parents and protect their family members. As daughters, they need to receive their parents＇ education, follow their parents＇ orders, esteem their parents and keep the dignity of her parents＇ home. All these have nothing different from the previous women. The difference between them is that women in Shih-shuo Hsin-yu have more open thinking and are braver in pursuing their love. They have foresight and sagacity and often help their families to overcome the difficulties. They have high cultural quality and are glib and quick-tongued in arguments. Their personal character exerted important influence on the later generations.
