严复的翻译思想不仅影响深远,且饱受争议。学术界争论的焦点之一,在于严复一方面在《译例言》中提出了"信达雅",另一方面,《天演论》被认为违反了"信"的原则。功能派翻译理论打破一系列以"忠实与自由"为轴心的对立,强调翻译功能决定翻译策略,被赋予更大的灵活性和适用性。从功能主义理论出发,对比《天演论》和《进化论与伦理学》的其他两种译本,有助于探究严复的翻译要求、翻译功能、翻译策略,从而对严复翻译思想以及翻译行为取得更全面、更公正、更客观的评价。

Yan Fu＇s translation thoughts are not only influential, but also controversial. Most arguments centered around the fact thaton the one side, Yanfu put forward “ Xin Da Ya” in Translators’ Foreword, on the other side, his translated work Tian Yan Lun was consideredto have violated the principle of “Xin” . Breaking with a series of dichotomies centering around “ faithful and free” ,functionalismputs emphasis on translating function＇s determining role in making translating strategies, and therefore is granted more flexibility and applicability.A comparison between Tian Yan Lun and other two translated versions of Evolution and Ethics would be helpful for us to probeinto the translation brief, translation function and translating strategies, thus to get a more complete, fair and objective criticism on YanFu’ s translation thoughts and actions.
