Speech act metonymy theory, proposed by Panther & Thornberg, renders a brand-new perspective for the construction of indirect speech act and pragmatic inference in business conversations. Business speech acts operate within the framework of the state-of-affairs scenarios with their illocutionary meaning being interpreted by it. Each component is metonymically standing for the whole scenario in business scenarios. Based on business state-of-affairs scenarios, the illocutionary metonymy can reasonably explain why people arrive at the intended meaning so readily and effortlessly in business communication. There- fore, it is of great application value in cross cultural business negotiations.
