Before Tang Dynasty, the emergence of the literary families of Jiangsu began in Western Han Dynasty, and in the nearly eight hundred year span down to Sui Dynasty, twenty-five literature families emerged, with 255 members acknowledged. The geographical distribution of the families of literature before Tang Dynasty showed a very unbalanced nature in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. The spatial distribution was more concentrated on Suzhou in Jiangnan region and Xuzhou in Jiangbei region, with comparatively sparse scattering in Changzhou, Wuxi, Zhenjiang and Nanjing of Jiangnan region, and Yangzhou, Huai'an, and Lianyungang of Jiangbei region. No literature families are found in Nantong, Taizhou, "Yancheng and Suqian of Jiangbei region. Chronologically, a number of 10 literary families are found both in the period of Wei & Jin Dynasties and Northern & Southern Dynasties, and only five literary families appeared in Han Dynasty. Before Tang Dynasty, the literature families of Jiangnan and Jiangbei regions in Jiangsu demonstrate different regional culture characteristics from each other in four aspects: the writer's identity , the literary genres, the emotional expression and the stylistics of the works. The booming of Jiangsu literary families before Tang Dynasty enabled a gradual flourish of regional literature in Jiangsu during Six Dynasties , eventually forming the first peak in literature sector.
