漠北回鹘改宗摩尼教是其历史发展中的一件大事。摩尼教早在公元 76 3年以前就已经传入回鹘民间 ,并得到官方认可 ,开始公开传播。之所以如此 ,是因为回鹘改宗摩尼教的社会条件在此之前尚未成熟。其后 ,回鹘为了依靠粟特商人发展商业经济 ,故赋予粟特人所崇之摩尼教以崇高的地位。摩尼教在漠北回鹘国教地位的确立不是一帆风顺的。它在回鹘立足后 ,曾借回鹘之势盛行于唐地。摩尼教对回鹘社会产生了深远影响。
