20世纪五六十年代,徐的批评文章经常在港台文艺界激起较大的波澜。个中原因,排除徐本人不事阿谀之道而屡屡与人不睦,则正是徐敏锐深刻的直言能经常触到当时文艺界的痛楚。对徐因过于"学术"而屡次三番地引起港台文艺界的"围攻",也有诸多热爱徐的读者与研究者为他鸣不平。徐学识之驳杂在新文学作家中堪称翘楚,他在哲学、心理学领域浸淫多年,自有非常严谨与冷静的思辨气质,兼以多年的创作经验,所以他的文艺批评实践自然极有研究价值,理应引起学界之重视。

In the 1950 s and 1960 s, Xu Xu＇s critical articles often created waves in the world of letters in Hong Kong and Taiwan mainly because his sharp and profound remarks, directly made, hit the sore spots of the literary world, if not taking into consideration his not currying favours and having constant enmities with people. Many readers and researchers felt for him despite the repeated attempts to besiege him by the literary world in both Hong Kong and Taiwan as a result of his being too ‘scholarly＇. Top of the range amongst writers of new literature, with his possession of miscellaneous knowledge, Xu had been versed in philosophy and psychology for years, having cultivated a speculative quality of calm rigor and this, coupled with his many years of creative writing, made his literary critical practice something worth studying to which much attention ought to be paid by the world of scholars.
