An Ignored Modern Novel: On The Birth of a Son by Hsia Tsi-an

夏济安是被中国学界遗忘的一位杰出学者,从现有资料看,他的文学创作并不多见,由于种种原因,他的学术成绩长期被大陆文学研究界忽视。这篇论文首次解读夏济安的《传宗接代》,并借助新批评方法对该文本进行了细读分析,重点阐释了小说对儒释两种文化冲突的独特解读,以及小说所运用的现代叙事技巧和叙事的困惑,试图探究这篇小说的文学价值,借此管窥夏济安文学创作的意义,以期引起国内研究界同好的注意。

Hsia Tsi-an is an outstanding scholar, forgotten by the scholarly world in China. From what information that is available, there are not a lot of creative writings by him. For many reasons, his scholarly achievements have for a long time been ignored in the world of literary research in China's Mainland. This is an article that, for the first time, provides an interpretation of his novel, The Birth of a Son, and, by using the method of new criticism, conducts an analysis of it through intensive reading, focusing on the explication of the novel in its unique reading of the conflict between Confucian culture and Buddhist culture, as well as the use of modern narrative techniques and predicaments in the novel, in an attempt to explore the literary value of this novel and view the meaning of its literary creation, hoping to catch the attention of similarly interested people in this country.
