This paper aims to provide a metarepresentational account for deliberate misinterpretation( DMI) and the verbal humor thus rendered in the framework of Relevance Theory. In terms of metarepresentation,DMI can be divided into interpretative and metalinguistic uses. As a widely-used communicative strategy, the pragmatic functions of DMI are highly dependent on the context. By aligning the content or framework of different utterances, the hearer can expropriate the speaker's words and ideas and mold them to a contrary communicative goal. In an ironical context, the agents may use DMI as a means of self-protection or verbal aggression. "Incongruity"between utterances plays a core role in DMI. Metarepresentationally, this contradiction can be focused or appreciated through resemblance.
