On Mao Xianshu's Poetic Writing

毛先舒是明清之际杭州诗人群体中成就较高、影响甚众,且颇具特色者,在明末清初诗坛占有重要地位。清初宗唐、宗宋之风此起彼伏,毛先舒受云间及西陵宗唐复古风气影响,且身经丧乱,仕途偃蹇,其诗多有效仿汉魏杜诗、沉郁悲凉的一面;同时又有追摹齐梁及晚唐者,绮思华藻、艳而不冶、丽而不俗。毛先舒诸体兼擅,以绝句成就最高、清新流利、情韵兼胜,赢得了清初诗学家的高度认可。

Mao Xianshu was one of the most important poets in Hangzhou in the Late Ming and Early Qing dynasties. With the fierce competition between Tang poetry and Song poetry in his age, Mao Xianshu, who experienced the unrest and was greatly influenced by the retro theory of Yunjian and Xiling, imitated Han-Wei style and Du Fu's poems, but at the same time he also wrote love poems in imitation of Qi-Liang and the late Tang style. He was accomplished in all genres but especially in jueju, which was highly celebrated for their freshness and fluency.
