The author identifies leaders in distance and e-learning from Europe, including didactic conversation, the industrialization of learning and teaching, transactional distance, economics, woman learners, e-tivity to support the management of online learning, leadership and mobile learning. The author questions why so many leaders coming from Europe and proposes that part of the answer lies to the strengths of the Open University movement of Europe over nearly 50 years, and secondly to the cross national teams funded by the European Union that have supported so much research and development.
