《淮南鸿烈》在继承原始道家以"道"为本的基础上,更加注重"道"的现实应用。"道"的现实性不仅体现在生养万物上,更体现在人事中,"道"落实于人身成就的人性则是把握人事的关键,就"道"和"性"本身来说还是比较抽象的,因此,需要通过"性"在应接事物中产生的"情"这一更为具体的概念来把握人事。"情"在《淮南鸿烈》中不仅是统治者在个体修养和治国理政方面的重要切入,更是贯穿于整个历史发展的过程。"情"由真挚到伪诈的变革不仅是个体生命本真状态的沉沦,更预示了人类历史的倒退性发展。而这个过程并非不可逆转,《淮南鸿烈》首推"道"的目的就在于为个体生命的澄明和社会发展的和谐寻求理想归宿,而这一"复归于朴"是通过"外物反情"实现的。
